Barista and Bartender: Is it the same?

Two almost similar words but have different meanings, that is what describes a Barista and Bartender.

People always have misconceptions about these two professions. Both work in the Hospitality industry especially in Food and Beverages services.

What distinguishes it is :

  • The way of working
  • The place of work
  • How to groom
  • Procedures for treatment
  • Their knowledge of their respective fields.

First, we will discuss it briefly.

Barista

A Barista is a person who prepares a coffee drink, especially espresso-based drinks such as Latte, Cappuccino, Americano, etc.

The Barista must have knowledge of coffee beans, from the types, aroma, to taste. They are also trained to operate the coffee machine properly, doing a good latte art and manual brew.

A Barista’s job is not an easy job. When viewed from the front, it may look relaxed, but in that there are so many things to learn, practice, improvise.

A barista must have good communication skills. Because, while they are working, they can also interact with customers who come to the coffee shop or answer questions asked by customers.

Latte Art

Usually, they work in a coffee shop. The coffee shop can be in the form of a franchise or in its own name or joining a restaurant.

The way of their grooming maybe looks casual, not formal grooming. They wear t-shirts or uniforms provided by their workplace.

The barista’s work may be done a lot in the morning to late afternoon, when people start the day, they will go to the coffee shop and look for a cup of coffee.

Bartender

A bartender is a person who prepares alcoholic drinks as well as non-alcoholic drinks.

A bartender should have :

  • Knowledge of drinks, especially mixed drinks
  • Knowledge about alcohol types, glass types, use of bar tools
  • Good communication skills
  • Mastering foreign languages especially English

The type of drink made by the bartender :

  • Mocktail (Non-alcoholic drinks mixed with juices, sodas, or any other ingredients)
  • Cocktail (Alcoholic drinks mixed with flavoring ingredients)

A bartender usually works in bars, clubs, hotels, or restaurants.

Usually, the bartender wears a shirt and trousers. They often choose black as the color of their clothes.

So after reading the article, I hope you get a better understanding of how to differentiate between Barista and Bartender. It may look similar, but inside that, they have different tasks to do.
